Theft from baggage US Airways flight 3127

Granted, this is a small loss compared to many on this forum, but I guess that's why it makes me so mad.
When I reached Houston on July 18, I noticed a striped top that I was sure I had packed was missing. I assumed I had left it at home. Didn't dawn on me that it had been stolen, though I had a "security screened luggage" tag on my bag. It had been in my carry-on, but since I was on a puddle jumper, they made me check bag at the gate.
When I returned home on July 23, I could not find the top and filed a claim the next day for $60. I've just been told that because I did not report the top was missing immediately at the airport, they will not reimburse me.
Ridiculous. I did the right thing and made sure the mistake was not mine before filing. I would have been better off if I'd committed fraud when I reached Houston and listed several hundred dollars worth of clothes were missing. How can they get away with this stuff?

Not to blame

I would suggest that you take this action further. Put it is writing (again, if possible) and state what you have in your writing, that since the item was in your carry-on which was subjected to gate check-in, you were not able to fully ascertain immediately that it was packed. Disruptive influences while on the road shakes confidence and sense of control, sometimes one tends to be extremely apologetic – to their detriment. Address the letter to a senior person within the insurance department with the usual evidences of travel: boarding pass(es), what remains of the air ticket, baggage checks and anything else that would be of help. It happens more frequently than you may think. Goodness, you know – everybody reasonable knows – it was not your fault!
