Customer Service did not cancel my tickets

I booked four tickets with American Airlines for travel to Chicago. Three tickets were paid fares one ticket was 50,000 miles. I called three weeks ago and canceled the tickets. When I canceled the tickets I was told that the 50,000 mile ticket could be changed for no fee because it was not a discount reward but that three or the tickets would cost $150 each to change. I understood and agreed, after all, it was over $2,000 in tickets. Last night at 10:15 I received an email that stated I was elegible for early check in. I thought it was an oversite on the system. but I better check in the morning. I called today to check on the tickets. I was told that we missed the flights this morning and that the ticket value was lost, even the reward ticket. When I informed her that I canceled the tickets three weeks ago she said they had no record of that and that there was nothing they could do. I could contact customer service and see if they wanted to issued a discount voucher. I have contacted customer support, but if past history is any experience, I just lost $2,000 and 50,000 miles. This stinks. Any suggestions?

Ask for an itemization of your phone bill, which will show the time of the call and the number you called to cancel the tickets. This will provide some substantiation of your claim. However, unless you have the name of the person you spoke to... you are on dodgy ground. Best to make a record of all calls you make....
