A POSSIBLE reason that happened is because the weather was not so bad that airplanes could not fly in it, but it was bad enuf that the FAA needed to thin out the arrivals and departures. You probably already know this, but in case you don't, I'll explain what happens. When bad weather hits, sometimes even just rain, visibility drops. When visibility drops, the airplanes cannot land as close to each other as when it's clear. On a clear day, you can land about 2 airplanes a minute. With bad visibility, that rate drops to 1 airplane a minute or less. So, the case may have been that the FAA told CO, UA, DL, AA, etc, that they had to choose 2 out of every 5 flights to cancel to thin out the load... they happened to choose your flight, twice. I think the idea that it was selected because it is a smaller airplane is probably on the right track, but it could have been that your arrival time in EWR was a particularly busy time and they were forced to cancel more flights during that time period. I'm with PHX when he says we would like the flight numbers and times. Those would probably explain A LOT!
