this doesn't have to do with the airline, they were doing what they are meant to be doing, it is known that you need to have a roundtrip ticket to places in which you need a visa, so that they know your not going to stay there illegally
yeah they dont always check, but this time they did, and they were following the countries (thailands) guidelines of stay, the airline didn't make this rule, they are just obliging by the rule
i dont know if it says this on expedia but you can find this on the international airlines websites (BA, Singapore airlines, Cathay, Thai, Japan, etc)
it is your responsibility to have the necissary requirements met, such as paperwork and ticket to leave the country or proof that your going to be staying longer etc
