before persuing legal action you need to first find out why the flight was cancelled and since it was KLM they are the ones responsible to give you this information. Since your parents english isn't so great maybe the agents at KLM had no way of communicating this. Second are you're parents travelling on india passports or US passports. Its possible if they are traveling with Indian Passports they may not be able to leave the airport at all without Visas, Ask a KL rep about this. I mean Europe isn't like US, because of their laws a hotel must be provided if there is a cancellation. But if they are not flying with proper passports then they will have to stay in the airport.
