Things change. Perhaps some passengers that were supposed to fly into Las Vegas to connect to that MCO flight didn't make it. They would have shown as booked into those seats when the SFO agent checked the night before but they were available when the PHX agent checked because they were canceled in the interim.

This is the exact reason that I never look back to see what "could have been" if I don't make it on a flight. All it does it make you mad for no reason, because like PHX said, things change constantly, especially overnight, and in adverse weather situations. Hindsight is always 20/20. As far as a laptop goes, you will never see me without one while on a trip. That is for two reasons, I cannot possibly be out of the country for more than 2 days without checking work emails, my inbox will be full in no time flat, and I will start missing emails. And two, it is soooooooo much faster to log on to the internet and check/change flights yourself if necessary.
