Hey Pattis, here's a story dealing in a similar situation. I was checking in for a United flight and right next to me was a family of 4. The father was arguing with the agent because, on a full flight mind you, they were not seated together. The father's argument was "We all have the same last name, why didn't you seat us together?" The agent explained it's not her, it's the computer and the computer doesn't by last name or who is "supposed" to sit together, it just assigns seats." And this went on from when I was standing in line, to when i checked in for my flight until i left the counter. It's always best to check in 24 hours in advance, if it's allowed. I know some international flights you cannot. But if it's really important to have seats together (especially when travelling with kids) yea then try to at least call 24 hours to get them, that's usually when the seats are released.
