Please excuse Silent Bob Jerkero for this slip up. We knew it was in baggage you were checking in. However yesterday was Superbowl in the US and we were all at my place having a good time and he maybe had too much to drink.

The airline had no right to take these items from your bags and they have to return them to you. If they can't return it, they have to pay you the value. And we are talking the value in Delhi, not what you paid for it in Australia. I presume it was advantageous to you as you were in Sydney to buy it there and take it back with you. They can't deprive you of that advantage. So look around the shops in Delhi for an equivalent grill, and use that price for your claim. By all means have your receipt ready to show what you paid for it. But the Court sometimes gives "replacement cost" for assessing damages. Had the airline staff not taken these items, you would have had them with you in Delhi. So you are entitled to be restored to the same position if you had not suffered at their hands - which is to have the items in India. And if we are talking money, it's the cost of replacing them in Delhi.

Also with regard to the two days lost at the start of your vacation, Silent Bob Jerkero says you are entitled to damages for this as well.

Good luck.
