I don't know how long it's been since you've taken a flight, but Delta is not the only airline that has "cashless cabins" American, Continental, U.S. Airways, United and yes even the beloved Southwest all have a cashless cabin policy.

Delta does accept Cash at the ticket counter for checked bag fees. but then again Southwest is the only of the above listed carriers that doesn't charge these fees.

As far as the overselling, the last time I checked most airlines also oversell their flights as well. perhaps it was just more noticable since spring break is known as a busy travel time in the United States.
