The analogy with the travel agent is not simply not comparing like with like. If AA sub-contract their check-in, these people are acting on behalf of the airline and they are responsible for their actions. The initial treatment received by the customer is testament to this... as the supervisor was initially supportive. The airline clammed up later, I am sure because they can smell a lawsuit. AA are firmly on the hook here.
