You wouldn't get compensation, because some arsy employee would tell you that you voluntarily came off the plane and you would need to buy a whole new ticket. Especially if it was Delta.
If the child is never separated from the parent, the the airline should have no compunction about making it a guarantee. That way the passenger is reassured and would be due compo in the eventuality that they could not do it. If it was in the T&C's, it would strengthen the power of the FA's and Gate Agents to reassign existing passengers.
(btw, I set 14 as the guideline.. I doubt you can say a 13 yo has not been separated in your 20 years)
