American Airlines guarantees the fare for 24 hours or until midnight the next day, your time zone. The reservation can be held longer, especially for an international flight that is well in the future. So you were guaranteed of purchasing a ticket on the flight for 3 days but the fare was only guaranteed for 24 hours. If other people didn't purchase the lower priced tickets the fare rules were only good for 21 days prior to the flight and you purchased on the 20th day then the price would go up.
