Default They charge for miles after denying upgrade

I purchased tickets for my wife and I to visit our grandchildren for Christmas. Due to a family illness, my wife had to go early. OK, no complaint. I had requested an upgrade to first class using my One Pass miles. We didn't get the upgrade (wait list, as I expected). However, I was told that it would cost $75.00 to get the UNUSED points back! Why bother?
