  1. Because Orbitz did everything right.. and Delta didn't
  2. Because the customer didn't call Orbitz at the time, so they had no way of knowing the customer was stranded
  3. Because Delta have admitted the negligence
But worth contacting Orbitz and seeing if they will compensate you. I just don't think they will and morally this mess was created by Delta and they are responsible for the OP's consequential damages.
