Default reason for cancellation unbelievabe

Our flight arrived in Newark from Oklahoma city on time at 12:00 noon, but after checking the board for our connecting flight to Manchester, NH, it was canceled by the Air Traffic Controllers ( I didn't think they had the authority to cancel flights). We had made reservations in Manchester for a rental car and now we were stuck in Newark.
The customer service employee stated that the next flight to Manchester would be at 9:45 p.m. - almost 10 hours for a lay-over and we would still have to drive to Portland, Maine (our final destination).
The customer service employee said we could go to JFK or LaGuardia for any other connection. This was unacceptable! The final decision was to change our flight to Boston which was the only alternative that would get us to Portland, Maine that afternoon.
We had to take a bus, at a cost of $54.00 additional, to go from Boston to Portland. Then we had to get a new rental car reservation at a higher rate than we had in Manchester.
The additional problem we had was our return trip was from Manchester,NH., and the additional expense of a one way car rental to Manchester was $81.16. All of this due to the fact that Continental canceled the incoming flight from Newark to Manchester.
We will never again use the Continental airlines - Southwest here we come!
