Default "No Show" status-loss of airfare credit

Since when did airlines start requiring passengers to call and cancel a flight in order to preserve your unused airfare? I spoke to US Airways reservations on 9/1 because I had injured my foot and wasn't going to travel. I checked on rebooking but due to the short time, the rebooking was going to cost $800. I told the rep that I would rebook at a later time when I had different dates. At no time did she tell me if I didn't tell her I was canceling my flights on 9/1 and 9/6, that I would not be able to use the unused fare. I specifically asked about changing the reservations and she told me no problem, just call us back when you are ready.
When I called reservations on 9/11/11, reservations said I was in the system as a "no show" and therefore I did not have an unused fare credit. I asked to speak to a supervisor, but she refused, saying US Air "prefers" that the customer EMAIL customer relations, wait for a response and IF, customer relations agrees to change the No Show status, they would give me a reference number so I could call back and make my reservations for the future trip.
I am not asking for a refund, I realize I will get charged at a minimum $150 change fee plus the increase in ticket price and STILL US Air reservations refused to honor my unused air are and accept any responsibility for the the agent not communicating that I had to officially request a cancellation.
