A ticket is a "contract". Read every airlines "contract of carriage" on their website so you can get an idea of what is covered and what is not. All airlines consider a change of ticket a breach of contract. It really doesn't matter whether or not they could re-sell a flight on your ticket. If you violate your contract they will nail you. Plain and simple. The only way to avoid that is to buy a fully flexible, changeable ticket, which can cost 10 to 20 times more than a "discount" ticket.
