It pays to fly on non-US carriers when flying to the EU. Had you been flying on an EU carrier you could have claimed for the six hour delay, under EU Regulation 261/04. The DOT in the US is very weak in protecting consumer rights in aviation, no doubt as a result of the massive bribes (or lobbying as the call it) paid by the airlines.

US carriers are badly regulated, provide a poor service and not particularly competitive on price.
