The checked baggage system is fully automated, so there is little human contact. I think that your luggage is supposed to travel at the same speed you're moving through the airport.

Anyway, since its fully automated, the mechanics that move your baggage along to where its supposed to go (assuming that the laser scanner doesn't misread the paper tag and send it to the wrong location) will tear at anything that is outside of the bag surface itself- handles, zippers, luggage tags, you name it.

My guess is, your claim will probably go nowhere anytime soon (either by sheer ignorance or plain stupidity), adding insult to injury.
