It sounds like you got hit with one of those "different class of service" deals, where if you are sitting in a lower seat class, if the same class isn't available to you on the day you wanna change, you could end up paying more. You did say the guy said "any seat" but by any seat, I am not sure that is what he meant, though I'm not to clear on the specifics of the seat class, i believe that's the jist of it. You gotta be careful of that on any airline. Though some are more courteous in the case of emergency travel. I'm surprised, usually Delta is quite good with that. (But again I am a United fan)
