Under a weather hold, they are under the direct orders of ATC (Air Traffic Control). If ATC doesn't give the clearance to go, they can't go. An airline doesn't stay in business staying on the ground. It is also likely (this being the last flight of the day) that crew would have "timed out" on hours (also a federal rule) before the flight would have reached it's destination.
Perhaps if passengers didn't act like spoiled children throwing a tantrum when life (or mother nature) throws them a curve ball, flying would be a far more enjoyable experience for everyone.
