AA sent a replacement aircraft to Birmingham which departed 9:25 AM the next day. They should have offered options to re-book you on their next flights however there were only two flights left that day, both back to DFW so you probably would not have made it to CLT that night anyway. That being the case they should have offered to rebook you on a different airline under what is commonly called "Rule 240" however as you paid $1,000 for your ticket (normal fare, even same-day purchase, is around $152-$282) it can be assumed that the other airlines with flights to Charlotte were most likely over-sold which would preclude AA from booking you on them under "Rule 240." My best advice is to submit the receipt for the ticket you purchased to AA for reimbursement or consider pursuing in small claims court.
