"At the last minute one of the stewardesses decided this was not allowed and she insisted the helmet be put in the luggage hold"
the flight attedant didnt decide this. the FAA did. you CANNOT hold anything. all items must be stowed for taxi, take off and landing. it can become a dangerous object if (god forbid) anything should happen.
another thing doesnt add up here. delta and united are not partners. how can a delta flight be operated by united? i looked up the flight number for united and its not found. i do see the flight number on delta operated by delta. non stop on a 767-300 (which is large enough to hold your helmet). Im not going to jump to conclusions and say i dont belive you, just something doesnt add up.
A fragile or perishable item may be accepted as Checked Baggage in accordance with this Rule only if it is packaged appropriately (e.g., in an original, factory-sealed carton, in a cardboard mailing tube, in a container/case designed for shipping such item or packed with protective internal material.
As much as it sucks..imo they state they aren't responsible. I honestly would still fight with them on it. you didnt have a choice but to hand it over since it didnt fit in the cabin. Good luck
