With regard to the shuttle busses, this is rather normal in Europe. They don't do this in every airport, but you will find it. In fact if you are flying on KLM's intra-European airline, City Hopper, you WILL take a bus, since all of those aircraft sit at a remote hardstand. Frankfurt Germany is another.
