Default stole my money

On 6-28-13 I booked a flight for my daughter and her infant son. I chose to pay $80 more for a flight which would arrive mid afternoon rahter than one that arrived at 10:00pm. The flight was delayed which would have caused my daughter to miss her conecting flight. this would have left her stranded 8 hours in an airport with a 10 month old baby waiting for a flight which would arrive at 11:00 pm. I called US AIR and was told that they would "accomdate me by changing her to the flight I originally didn't want due to the late arrival and had paid extra to avoid. I was then told they would not refund the difference. Am I the only one scratching my head right now?
