Maybe because if they do raise the fares, people just like you will be screaming bloody murder about the high fares. Passengers don't care about the reality of fuel costs or anything else. They just want their cheap flights.
Fares came down because of the whining and sniveling of the passengers. And now you're whining and sniveling because you got what you ask for, and the airlines are in trouble.
Since you're in favor of spending more, why are you complaining about the extra fees? Especially since the only thing Alaska charges for, is extra luggage.
