I'm going to have to agree with the first post to some degree. No, it's not over the top, but it's not really professional either.
On the subject of no seat assignment, it really does save a bit of headache, and in the end, is it really that big of a deal to just go on and pick what you want? If you were the last to check in on any other airline, you wouldn't get a great seat either.
