Upon being late for check in, the ticket may have not been good for a refund. Exactly how early did that person show for the flight the second day? Being at the airport just in time does not count if their is a long line. All airports and airlines recommend no less than an hour and a half (many instruct to get there even earlier) in case of long lines.

It also sounds like the other person who was trying to use the ticket had another name. Ticket vouchers and credit are generally only allowed to be used by the same person who was named on the ticket for security purposes. Names on tickets can not be changed by the agents at the airport. Management may be able to do it but that has to be done ahead of time and not at the airport. But that depends on the contract of carriage that so few read.
