Delta Air circa 1969
I flew Delta around 1969. That Delta died sometime after deregulation. Like most of its "legacy" competitors, the Delta of today is only marginally removed from Spirit Air. I never came close to "Flying Colonel" status. However that program, such as it was, had a lot of honesty: You traveled X amount of miles in X amount of time and you got a plaque, and maybe some other trinkets. If you stopped flying the next day Delta didn't try to take-back their plaque, as they (and the other airlines) do today with credited miles. When you've had enough of the frequent flier ("FF") shell game transfer as many miles as you can to a "frequent stay" hotel program. That way you can salvage something from your miles. Then--swear-off the FF game. It's the same all over. How many hundred-dollar bills do you want to give away?
