Angry refund problems

I cancelled a ticket I had purchased with United Airlines on July 5, 2012 for a flight scheduled on July 30, 2012. I cancelled by phone and was told that I would be charged a 180 Euro ($211.34) cancellation fee and would receive the remainder of the fare ($1,100) after one billing cycle.

Since then I have called numerous times regarding the refund and was told that it was in progress but that the processing time was longer because I had paid online with a check and would receive a check in return by mail.

I called today to check the status once again and was told that my refund had been denied and I would not receive any money for the cancelled ticket. During the whole process I was never even told that there was a review, just that my refund had been approved and was being processed.

I was given no reason for this change or provided with any recourse. When I asked to speak with the refund department or the supervisor I was told that no one was available and that I had not recourse.

This is an unacceptable result and feel I have nowhere to turn but I feel I have nowhere to turn.

Hi there, We can help you if you answer these questions.

1. What was your departure/arrival airport?
2. Was this a non-refundable ticket?
3. Did you cancel your ticket BEFORE or AFTER scheduled departure?

Who cares? Not essential to the issue

This obviously is essential but since the OP has mentioned "was told that I would be charged a 180 Euro ($211.34) cancellation fee and would receive the remainder of the fare ($1,100) after one billing cycle", we can safely say that the ticket is refundable.

One can probably assume the ticket was cancelled before scheduled departure reading and drawing conclusions from the OP.

Judge: Do you know if the OP is eligible for a refund?

This sounded like a confusing case. It seems strange to pay the cancellation fee and then not get a refund. The only thing I can think of was the fare rules—perhaps it requires cancellation before departure and that did not happen. But you’re right, it is safe to assume based on the original post. Is there anything else that could have caused this?

If not, OP – can you confirm for us that you cancelled before departure?
