Default Charged for second sector though first was cancelled by airline

My wife & I were booked to fly Kuwait Airways, NY to Kuwait on 12-4-16, flight no. KU0118, on frequent flier miles. This was to connect to Kuwait to Mumbai on 12-5-16, flt. KU0301, paid tickets.

The airline informed us that they cancelled KU0118 of 12-4-16. They re-booked both the sectors, but insisted on payment of 30$ to change the second sector. An appeal to their Customer Service (handled by Mr. John Varughese) was turned down.

Even though the airline is at fault in cancelling the first sector, we are being penalized. This is unfair. We hope you can help in making the airline return the 30$ (presently my bank has been instructed to send them the payment).

Thanks.
