I made a reservation for three people on a Delta flight, and received confirmation emails from Delta. However, I received check-in reminders from Northwest AND Delta, making me think that I accidentally booked the flights twice. I clicked on links in each of the emails and they led me to 2 DIFFERENT flight confirmation numbers, and 2 DIFFERENT flight numbers, one on Delta and one on Northwest. I freaked out a bit more. I know that Delta and Northwest were in the process of a merger so I called them and they sweetly told me that all that info was indeed for EXACTLY the same flight. I tried to convince them that this was very confusing and more than a little anxiety provoking but they didn't see it as a problem. I called a few more phone numbers that they told me to call to formally complain, but alas, each number was the 'wrong' one to do this, so I am just complaining here on airlinecomplaints.org.

If the trip is only one-way, involving a single, rather than connecting, flight, and is domestic, rather than international, you probably haven't got too much to worry about. Otherwise, there may, indeed, be trouble brewing. Unfortunately, if you didn't purchase a fully refundable ticket, there is little you can do, short of forfeiting the value of the ticket(s) and bookking with another airline, to stop your trip from turning to s**t. If the departure date has yet to arrive you CAN start to lay the foundation for a potential small claims action in the event things do go wrong. Send (UPS or Express Mail if necessary) copies of both confirmations to Delta Customer Service in Atlanta. If you use Express Mail send it with "Return Receipt Requested." Or, print-out a copy of the UPS delivery confirmation. As long as you can show that Delta received your correspondence prior to the departure date, and things went wrong anyway (which means they ignored your letter) you should have a solid case in Small Claims Court. Naturally, the small claims action I'm talking about would be based on a denial of boarding, or other problems, related to the matter of the duplicate confirmation number. Weather, over-bookking, delays, etc. would be entirely different matters.

This was true before the merger but will become more common as Delta and Northwest combine their routes and schedules. What you bought online is known as a codeshare. Although assigned a Delta flight number the flight is actually operated by Northwest. Since it is operated by Northwest it will also have a Northwest flight number which may or may not be the same as the Delta flight number. Delta and Northwest still maintain separate reservations systems and because you purchased your tickets from Delta and are actually flying on Northwest operated flights the record of your reservation is assigned a unique confirmation code in each reservation system.
Since your flights are operated by Northwest if you want to check in online or select/change your seat assignments you should use the Nortwest confirmation code on Northwest's website http://www.nwa.com. When you arrive at the airport there have been some changes you should be aware of. If the airport you are departing from has combined their ticket counter and gates you should go to Delta to check your bags and follow signs for checking in on a Northwest operated flight. If the airport hasn't combined the operations yet just look for Northwest. Don't listen to the "gloom, doom, hellfire and brimstone" predictions that were previously posted. What occurred is normal and always happens when there is a codeshare involved. "Butch" is just trying to scare you. Last edited by PHXFlyer; Aug 27, 2009 at 10:57 PM. |

Yeah, simple.. isn't it lovely to have the caring folks at Delta on your side, making your journey, smooth and uncomplicated. However, please allow 7 hours before check in, to ensure that you find the the right check in desk, process a few technicalities and make it to the right gate. If you check in less than 7 hours before you flight, please be aware that there will be a charge of $100 per minute on Delta Codes, or $75 per minute on Northwest. This only applies on Tuesdays, however on other days of the week, please check the Northwest Website for Delta codeshire rules and vice versa for Delta on Northwest. Please be aware that Delta operates an embargo on questions about your flight between the months of June and September, so please ensure that your questions are addressed before then, as Federal regulations prohibit airlines from giving truthful answers during the embargo period.
You may have noticed earlier postings which indicated that Delta recently kept their valued hostages/passengers on the ground at JFK for over six hours. Please be advised that Delta has now introduced taxi meters in all their aircraft, and there will be further charges levied for aircraft which remain on the ground too long. This passenger incovenience charge will be $10 per minute, plus taxes and fees. |

Free flight vouchers, on Delta and just about any other airline, are honored anytime before noon on any February 31st. Frequent flyer miles can be redeemed for all flights departing AFTER noon on any February 31st.
Jim, if the Monty Python troupe was still in existence today, what do you think would be the odds of their doing a parody on the sad state of airline customer service? Actually, Python's "Dead Parrot" skit comes very close to the type of real-life interractions people have related on this board. |

Actually, for the sake of the OP, I would welcome being made a liar out of. That said, I think the days when one could put their trust in any US-based airline passed about three decades ago. Regardless of the low statistical probability of being caught in a tarmac delay airlines have demonstrated they are capable of just about ANYTHING when it comes to tarmac delays. Still, I was impressed with some pro-customer statements the head of Sun Country Air made to the media. It will be interesting what happens when that executive's "check" is presented for "payment." And, yes, I know--Sun Country Air has limited routes and may still be in bankruptcy receivership. |
