Only a couple of days ago I went on aboard a Silk Air Flight MI334 which left Malayasia and its destination was Singapore. Throughout the start of the flight we encountered quite abit of turbulance but the flight was mainly quite smooth. Just five minutes before touchdown at Changi International Airport one of the flight attendents told passengers to check there seatbelts are tightented. Once I went to check that my seatbelt was tightened my seat belt simply fell apart on the right side. I was unable to call for the flight attendents due to the descent which left me to figure out what to do. I then pulled the seatbelt around the arm of the chair to support me. Fortunately the landing was quite smooth but if it wasn't there could have been serious consequences.
When I disembarked the plane I told the flight attendents about my problem and they barely even apologized. Silk Air is lucky that no injuries were sutstained by me and I would reconsider flying with them again. Personally thoguh I don't understand how silk air wasn't able to make sure my seatbelt was fully assembled. The seatbelt must of been hanging by a string because I barely even pulled it and it fell apart. I ALSO HAVE PHOTOS OF THE SEATBELT BUT THE FILE SIZE IS TO BIG. CONTACT ME IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM. |

I believe that after each segment, the FA's on European airlines are required by regulation to check the belts. They must then cross them flat on the seat when this check is complete to indicate it has been done. Not sure if this is the case in Singapore.
However, I am not sure any airline can guarantee that a piece of equipment will not fail. Indeed, no airline can guarantee the engine won't fail, which is a tad more serious. I think the FA's response was poor, but I don't think this indicates there is anything inherently unsafe about SilkAir.. and to describe this event as a Horror Flight might be a tad hyperbolic!! |
