Default Delta cancelled my flight

On May 4, 2010, we had a terrible experience with Delta connecting flight 2477,
leaving Minneapolis to Los Angeles. Our original flight 2819 from Grand Rapids, Mi. on time into Minneapolis at 1:40pm. Once we arrived in Minneapolis Airport, we proceeded to the departing gate, but found no one was there and no sign of flight cancelled. Our next stop was to nearest departing gate with two Delta agents. There, we were told flight 2477 was cancelled due to mechanical problems.

We were also advised to a service representative booth to rebook our tickets. Once there, and after 30 minutes of waiting, we were told the next two flights to LAX were overbooked, But we may try standbys for the next two flights, and were also confirmed on last flight to LAX departing at 9:30pm.( almost 8 hours later than our original departing time.)

During next 8 hours, we tried fruitlessly standbys, but to no results due to overbooking. Our flight was finally taken off from Minneapolis airport at 10 pm and arrived in LAX past midnight.(almost 9 hours later than our original plan which is 3am Michigan time).

We wondered why Delta knowingly overbooked these flights from MSP to LAX. When one of this flight is cancelled with a mechanical problem, why won’t they re-route their passengers through different airlines or planes?

What Delta did in this situation is an unacceptable practice.

Sadly, Delta doesn't care. It is bottom of the customer complaints league.. why do they need to care. They recently went bankrupt. They were then rescued by being allowed to take over NorthWest, fail to meet their obligations and emerge as the largest airline in the world. If that is the price of failure, why do they need to do anything more?

Well, you kind of answered your own question here. If everything was already full, why do you wonder that things were now overbooked? They were overbooked because they WERE moving passengers to other flights, and filling them up. There are only so many seats to go around.
