On August 25, 2011, Karen Pascoe checked her two cats onto her flight from JFK to San Francisco. Each cat was flying in its own crate. She went through the TSA system with them, securing their carriers per AA policies. She then said goodbye to them and went up to the passenger area. Thirty minutes later, a baggage supervisor called to tell her that one of the cats had been lost. When she returned to the baggage area, she saw the empty carrier that had contained Jack. Barry was still secure in his carrier. After walking around the baggage area and calling for Jack for over an hour, Karen was advised to take the last flight out and they would call her as soon as they found him. She got on that later flight with Barry. Jack has not been seen since.
Mistakes happen, of course. But since poor Jack was lost, AA has made only a cursory effort to find him, and will not allow anyone into secured areas to search. AA employees on the ground are being as supportive as possible. The company itself, however, is completely unresponsive.
Karen's sister started a Facebook page to rally support for Jack; over 15,000 people are now helping in any way they can (distributing flyers, emailing shelters and rescue organizations, searching around the airport). We hoped that broadening awareness of Jack's plight would help shame AA into putting some serious resources into rescuing him. But it hasn't.
Jack is not a lost suitcase. He is a living, feeling soul, probably scared and lonely and hungry. Please visit Jack's Facebook page and offer whatever assistance you can to help reunite him with his family!
