Default Continental reaps benefits of it's cancellations at consumer expense

My sister and I booked a vacation through Expedia, including airfare. The airline, Continental, changed our flights 3 times before cancelling one of the flights on the return trip. We initially paid extra, by having to purchase First Class tickets, for the return flight to avoid an overnight layover in New Jersey. Once we were given notification of the flight cancellation we contacted Expedia. "They are working on it and will call us back in an hour". We have been told this after multiple calls to Expedia because they never call us back. Direct calls to Continental have been even less accommodating. Firstly, we have been put on hold for up to 2 hours without getting through. When we finally got through to them, Continental's "offer" was to either accept an overnight layover in New Jersey (no compensation for the initial cost of the first class ticket we were forced to purchase to avoid this) with a voucher for a NJ hotel but no guarantee there would be a room available. Or, we could return the day before scheduled (losing one hotel night already paid for) or return one day later (we would have to pay for an additional night, if we can get one). Continental will not reimburse for either hotel night. Continental's other "offer" is to cancel our flight without charging us a penalty (we loose our hotel cost and our vacation). I understand that this is all due to a merger between Continental and United Airlines. Obviously, this will be of great financial benefit to them, and they could care less at what expense it is to the consumer. Indeed, they are reaping financial benefit from us (and I assume others) by placing us in a no win situation. I also expected more from Expedia. They already have our money. They have done nothing to remediate this.
