Angry Your ticket doesn't mean much

We believe US Air canceled our evening flight out of LGA because it wasn't full, called it weather, and did not help us with a voucher for a hotel.

There doesn't seem to be a central agency that cares if airlines do not honor the tickets they sell, so the airlines can get away with not giving you a hotel voucher. They called it weather, but that works because they aren't obligated to pay - and the weather that day in New York City was balmy and 48 degrees, even though it was January 17th. What can we do about this problem?

Is this legal? It shouldn't be.

Watch out for the after 9 p.m flights - US Air doesn't seem to honor their pledge to follow their own scheduled flights at that time.

It is time the DOT dropped the big weather "get out of jail free card" for the airlines. In Europe, the weather is no longer an excuse and airlines who cancel for weather reasons must look after the passengers. There was no resulting huge increase in charges.

Dayton, OH, which was also clear that night.
Flight 2329. It is often canceled, I understand.

On the evening on the 17th of January it was snowing with wind gusts over 35mph. So a weather cancel would certainly be possible. Weather report was from weather underground showing snow almost entire evening with gusty winds. Add unknown runway conditions and the cancel would certainly be plausible.

We just left Bangor with worse gusts and two inches of snow on the ground. Sorry, but you're just repeating the "party line" from the airline.

Nothing to do with a party line. Your original post said the weather "was clear“ that night when in fact it was not. As pilot for over 25 years what i'm saying is there are factors that come into play with those weather conditions that you are probably not aware of. I've also seen time and time again that the people that complain the most about weather cancellations are the same people that scream the loudest about airline safety when there is an incident and an aircraft goes off a runway in poor conditions. Everybody toes the "party line"as you say, and says they shouldn't have been flying in those conditions. Safety is a balance between operational performance and good judgment. Trust me, the crews do not like cancellations any more than you do because it messes up our work schedules also, and often requires us to be away from home and our families longer than planned.

Where was the wind 35 mph on January 17, 2012?

I'd like to know.

But my point is not that we SHOULD have left in poor conditions, but that it seemed obvious that the airline was canceling for other reasons and should have given us a voucher.
