We booked the tickets for my in laws from Chennai to NYC for the month of August. My father-in-law is sick right now and is not in a situation to even walk and hence we are planning to cancel the tickets. We did not realize its a non refundable ticket while booking. Anyways we called makemytrip.com and they said the ticket can be used within 1 year but should be the same route and the same passengers. Is there a way,we can make use of the ticket using different passengers? We don't think my in-laws can travel even next year due to their health conditions. We don't want to loose $3000+ for cancellation of tickets.We called Etihad airlines but they are refusing to do anything since we booked through makemytrip.com. Can someone from Etihad please help with this situation?

With reference to your mail, please note that booking is non-refundable as per airlines fare rules. Further, please note that you can make date within ticket validity of 12 months by paying date change charges as per airlines fare rules.
