WOW airlines baggage policies not enforced uniformly
We have flown on WOW before and on this trip carried the same bag we have used in the past, which we always carried on for free. The bag fit into the free carry-on slot if it was placed with the wheels on the side due to the rather unusual bag construction, but the gate crew in Boston insisted that the bag be placed with wheels down. Because of the shape of the bag, the wheels alone didn't fit, and they told us they would charge us $67 dollars to fly with it. We chose to get a different bag and throw away the one that didn't fit. On the return flight, we used this new bag - which was purchased expressly to meet WOW's carry on restrictions. The London Gatwick agent at check-in measured and tagged the bag as a free carry-on that could be put in the overhead bin. However, when we got to the gate, the agent insisted that it could not be placed in the overhead bins since we hadn't paid the fee for it. This was the first time we'd ever heard that a bag that fit into the free carry-on bin at check-in WAS NOT FREE. The gate agent told us that the bag had to be placed under the seat, and if we put it in the overhead compartment, it would be removed or we would be charged for it. Luckily, it did fit under the seat, but how can the rules change between check-in and the gate? Why would a bag that fit in the "free" compartment at check-in not have the same status at the gate? Why would a bag that had flown free on multiple previous flights (and which fit in the "free" compartment) not be allowed on a subsequent flight?
