Default Flight 2012 from DFW-RNO on July 11th

Well, I boarded the plane, and noticed I was sitting next to a full size "service" (police - off duty) drug dog and off duty police man. I would've been alright with it, except for the fact it was a wet mouth dog, and it's breath smelled worse than a dirty diaper. After he realized he was sitting in someone elses seat, he moved up a row to the correct seat. As people were boarding the dog attacked an african american man. During the course of the next hour on the flight it attacked two flight attendants, one other man, and the off duty police man.

The dog was then locked in the bathroom and we had to make an emergency landing in Albuquerque. After an hour and a half or so of having to wait to have the dog crated, we finally got back on our way to Reno.

Really this is attacking AA's stupid policy's on service dogs. Personally, I think only on-duty service dogs (aka dogs for the blind or disabled) and not off duty police dogs. Anyone else have something that is stupid like this?

i don't think you can blame AA's policy for the dog, I've never known dogs to just up and attack someone like that, usually they are very obedient. I sat next to a service dog (Off duty police dog) once and didn't have a problem the entire flight. That dog on your plane had issues that were unforseen by the airline.

what would be the difference if the dog was an off duty police dog or an on duty one? I think if the dog is fussy it will happen either way.

If they're on duty and their job is on the plane, then they should be able to stay... but a 65lb+ off duty police dog should have to be crated like everybody else's dog. Their policy is crap. The dog was under the owner's legs on an overbooked flight. It was too cramped in there and I think it just went crazy. It should have had to be crated and it would've saved $25,000+ in extra costs the airline is going to have to front (hotel costs for people missing connections, jet fuel, fees picked up by having to emergency land and retake off, etc.)

Also under the ADA service animals (both on and off duty) have to be transported or the carrier is fined for violating the ADA so its ADA not AA's policy. This covers police and military dogs also

It could have been worse. The police dog could have been packing a gun and request an alcholic beverage while inflight.

Sorry.

The ADA does not cover the airlines. The Airlines version is the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA).

And the ACAA does not cover police dogs or search and rescue dogs or military dogs.

The only service animals that are covered under the ACAA are animals that provide some sort of assistance to a passenger with a disability.
