Okay so here are the basic realities that everyone on this forum knows. Generally airlines will pay lip service to your complaints but never do anything about it. Airlines know they can abuse you by canceling flights, overbooking flights, and cramming you in like cattle because you have limited other options and the other airlines abuse you in similar ways.

Furthermore airlines are ENCOURAGED to treat you this way because overbooking ... makes them money. Canceling flights that don't have enough people to make the trip profitable ... makes them money. Squeezing that one extra seat in right next to the bathroom and making everyone fold themselves up like pretzels ... makes them money.

I've started a petition at whitehouse.gov to impose a set of mandatory fees that airlines would be required to pay to customers on all canceled, or overbooked flights. The idea is to provide an economic deterrant that will change the airline's calculations of the profitability of overbooking and canceling flights. It is sad but true that these companies value you so little that maximizing profitability comes before retaining their customers goodwill. Do something about it.
