In 2010, I purchased two round trip tickets from San Francisco to Ft. Lauderdale in order to take a cruise in November. Unfortunately I had a triple bypass in November, so we were unable to go on the cruise. Since I purchased the tickets from American Airlines, I contacted them for a refund. They informed me that their policy is not to issue refunds, but the tickets could be used on another flight. I used one of the tickets for my domestic partner to visit her grandchildren in Wisconsin. Having the appropriate documents sent by American, my partner presented the papers to the AA agents in San Francisco. She was told by AA that she would have to purchase a new ticket plus a $150.00 "change fee". she was told that the documents sent by AA were invalid, and they had no record of them. Since the trip was an emergency she bought another ticket. We now paid double for one ticket. When I contacted American Airlines, I spoke to a number of people, plus emails and letters back and forth. The issue is yet to be resolved. When I tried to use the remaining ticket for a flight form Sacramento to Minneapolis, I had to pay another $150 as a "change fee". It is now April 2012 and American Airlines appears to have dropped the issue. My advice is to NEVER fly American Airlines!
