Default Cancelled onward transfer

I had booked a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Heathrow and then to Leeds (return). Whilst it was a direct transfer on the 1st leg, my return had a 3 days break in London before returning to Kuala Lumpur.

My flight from Leeds on 19 June 2015 was scheduled for 9 pm. I called BA several times to check the possibility of getting on an earlier flight but after hearing that it was going to cost to much decided that I wasn't going to take the flight and took a train instead to London.

I later find out on the 22 June 2015 when I was to leave to Kuala Lumpur from Heathrow that my flight was cancelled due to no show in Leeds. I was told that it was general knowledge that if a passenger doesn't make one leg of the journey all ensuing flights will be automatically cancelled. Is this the case? I am not aware this rule nor are many of my friends who are frequent flyers. As I needed to get back to Kuala Lumpur on that same day, I had to book another ticket with a different airlines (BA was too expensive). Nothing on my ticket states the rule nor was I advised about it by my travel agent. When I checked with the agent, she said that it was general knowledge.

Is it general knowledge and can I ask for a refund? If I was able to, who is liable? BA or the travel agent? Thank you for the advise..
