Unfortunately since you booked 2 separate reservations (from Mumbai to Durban and then Durban to Jo'burg) you will have no recourse.

The way it works is the airlines are on-task to get you from point A to point B. In your case, its from Mumbai to Durban for flight 1 and Durban to Jo'burg for flight 2. They did accomplish that task for the 1st flight. They couldn't for the 2nd flight since you were not there on-time to board.

Now, had you booked from Mumbai to Jo'burg (i.e. a single reservation with a connecting flight in Durban), even if you were on the same physical flights, it would have been the responsibility of the airline to get you to Jo'burg (even if you missed the connection due to delays with flight 1)

In other words, the airlines treat each reservation separate.
