Some people feel the same way about infants and small children! Personally it doesn't bother me. I have allergies however I'm more likely to react to someone's heavily-applied perfume than a dog or cat. I have cats myself. There have been a few times when I've flown seated in close proximity to someone traveling with a pet and did not even know it until we de-planed. The dog remained in the kennel under the seat for the entire flight and never made a noise. Just like children some animals travel better than others.
