I fly 2-3 times per month, sometimes more. This summer, I have experienced an extremely high level of cancellations due to "mechanical problems" with Delta. This week I had two return flights. One from Detroit to/from Reagan and one from Detroit to/from Charlotte. Both outbound flights were cancelled. (flights 1844 and 1442). Two weeks ago my outbound and return flights from Detroit to Reagan were cancelled. It seems to happen when the flight is about half full and by combining it with the next flight the plane is full - although the airline indicates it is never the reason they cancel their flights less than 24 hours before they depart. There appears to be nothing I can do - are any of the other airlines cancelling flights at a 50% or more rate? I'd like to change to a more reliable airline.

I have had the same issue this summer (see my post bad summer for Delta). Had 3 flights cancelled in July and 1 so far in August. I found that when I called other airlines and mentioned that I fly frequently, they offered to match my status with Delta. My cancelled flights have mostly been in/out of Newark so I am going to try Continental as Newark is a Continental hub and they will match my status. I'll post back whether they turn out to be a more reliable travel partner.

Did Delta contact you, offer you any type of compensation or apologize in anyway? One of the things that surprised me the most is that I have their highest elite status and they did none of the above. If Continental provides good service, I will go from flying 156 segements on Delta in 2010 to 0 in 2011 and they don't even care.
