Default Force to pay $17 extra for no reason

Summary:
I was forced to pay $17 extra for a regular seat for no apparent reason.

Details: I flew from Portland, Maine to Washington, DC last Sunday night using a regular ticket I purchased a few weeks ago. I checked in online that morning and got a message saying that I had to choose a seat. The only ones left cost more money (minimum $17). When I arrived at the airport I asked someone at the US Airways desk to fix it. She said she did. I asked why this happened. She said they were keeping seats open for couples who wanted to sit together. To day I checked my bank statement and the $17 charge is still there.
