On July 5, 2012 5:30 pm (flight 977) I had a missionary trip from Fort Lauderdale to Peru. I made my reservation online and nowhere during the process of making the reservation was I informed that I could not bring more than one luggage and exceeding 50 pounds. I even called AHEAD OF TIME Spirit directly and expressed to them exactly the amount of luggage’s that I was bringing with me that day (3). To my surprise I drove from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale and when at the counter (airport) the lady told me that she was sorry but I could only take one bag. I told her that this was for a mission trip and the things were for orphans. They did not care at all about my trip or the things inside, they just stand firm saying repeatedly that I could not get on the plane with those luggages.
I did express to her (lady at the counter) that I called the airlines beforehand and that I was 4 hours away from home and that we had worked months in order to get on this flight and get this things to the orphans in Peru. The supervisor was very cold and did not even consider any option and she said “you are going to have to get rid of the things inside the luggage or you cannot get on the plane”. Spirit airlines did not offer and explanation only because they did not have one. There was no indication of these statements during the purchase of the ticket or on their website, later on I found that there was a note on the help menu (great way to cheat and abuse from consumers). Way to go Spirit! I had to leave $1000 in clothing and $500 in materials outside the airport just there, because nobody even helps me with saving all these precious things for orphans in need. WE LOST EVERYTHING THANKS TO SPIRITY AIRLINES! At this moment I am requesting a credit for all the lost, frustration and abuse from Spirit airlines. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS AIRLINE TO ANYBODY AND I WILL NEVER GET ABOARD ANY OF HEIR AIRPLANES! |

Unfortunately, you can NEVER rely on what an underpaid, unmotivated, disinterested airline employee tells you on the phone. They rarely know the airlines policies, and frequently don't even bother to look up the information before telling you what you want to hear just to get you off the phone. You must ALWAYS find the information on the website, print it and carry with you if you have any questions about policy. Often, the airport agent won't know or look it up either. They'll simply say "no, it can't be done", so you have to be prepared. Try contacting the Director of Customer Service at Spirit. www.heather.harvey@spiritair.com Good luck.

Right at the top of the Spirit website, was a link to baggage:
http://www.spirit.com/OptionalFees.aspx There is nothing on the website limiting the number of bags, only how much you're going to pay for them, and if they're overweight. I suspect there more going on here. |

As the OP stated, it's on the "help" tab, under "how many bags can I bring?"
Information like this needs to be prominently displayed and not buried in some obscure location that nobody is likely to look for such information. At the very least, it should be located on the "baggage" page. I think this should be brought to the attention of the customer service individual contact I provided. If you say "the agent told me" you don't really have an argument, because, if asked, the agent will say "I told them..." and it will be your word against theirs. |

As I said, it was prominently shown at the top of the page with it's own link. The OP evidently missed it. I didn't, and it wasn't under the help menu.

The OP is not objecting to the bag fees. He is objecting to the fact that he is allowed 1 bag, and only 1, to Peru. Period. I don't find that information ANYWHERE on the baggage fee page you're all referring to. I find it ONLY under the "help" tab. Please enlighten me if I'm wrong.

by showing the bag fees it pretty much states you can have more than 1 bag, as long as you dont mind paying extra
just found this though We allow one personal item free of charge; and for a fee we allow one carry-on bag, and at least one checked bag per customer. While we guarantee all customers the ability to purchase one checked bag, any additional checked bags are based on availability. For customers traveling to and from Lima, Peru, we only allow one checked bag per customer, and all items must meet weight and size restrictions. http://customersupport.spirit.com/en...gs-i-can-bring |

I think this customer should complain to the DOT and the Office of the State Attorney General in Florida. The reality is that he was misinformed by the airline itself and the website is not clear. The charges page for the baggage implies that you can take additional bags for a fee. It is an unfair term and condition to expect a customer to read every single item listed under the Help page on the website, and courts have repeatedly found in favour of consumers where this has been tested. For the airline to expect a customer to read through the entire help page, to find out that there was an exception for flights to Lima, Peru is ridiculous. The airline should either have put a note on the baggage page with a link to specific restrictions for specific destinations, or put a note on the confirmation sent to the customer, as Spirit knew that Lima, Peru had such a restriction. How the customer was supposed to know is anyone's guess. You can call the Florida Attorney General's office on (850) 414-3300. There is a link to the DOT on the Quick Links tab on this website.
CHECK FIRST to make sure that your confirmation didn't have any note advising you to check baggage rules for Lima, Peru. If it did, you will be out of luck. However, if you can demonstrate that Spirit expect customers to read the entire Help section to find out specific information, that is unreasonable and I think you may prevail. |

I found this under help and typed checked baggage the person who started the thread is out of luck:

Nonsense! DOT rules state that baggage fees and restrictions must be clearly disclosed on the website Burying this information in an obscure section of the website where most people would not normally check is not clear disclosure. The limitation should have been easily obtained and displayed on the baggage information page. |

A320 you are wrong to state if it is in the website, then Spirit are in the clear. It has been repeatedly found that burying specific terms and conditions in the website is an unfair term and condition.
It is unreasonable of Spirit to expect a customer to search in obscure pages. They have two clear opportunities to disclose this material fact. First, ensure either the confirmation email or the actual booking page when selecting Peru as a destination link to, or contain details of the restrictions or second, place an * against the baggage charges and make clear that restrictions apply to certain destinations. Anything less than this is unreasonable and the courts have supported this... for a contract to be valid there must be a meeting of minds of both parties...Spirit's approach to this problem militates against this. |

It should be clearly notified when making the booking and on the ticket print, that "the one bagage policy" is in place. |
