Default Lost $9 fare club after 3 days

Joined 9 fare club 11/12. Tried to cancel threw American Express. They said had to call spirit. I then found a way to cancel at their web site 11/15. No mention of it not being refundable. Never heard anything from them saying it was cancelled or not. I never was refunded from Amex so I presumed I would have this 9 club for one year and try to make the best of it. But to my surprise when I just tried to pay for a check bag on my flight next week they say I am not a $9 fare club member any more because I did cancell. News to me. I then ask to give me my one year service for my 59.95 but they say they will not. Even after it was only issued for 3 days of the 365 days. Are you kidding me. Any ideas?

The new DOT laws require all airlines too disclose all fees and taxes so you can see the real price of the ticket. There for the $9.00 fare club is history.

1.3. A Member may cancel his or her membership in the Club at any time by selecting the unsubscribe option within their FREE SPIRIT account profile or by notifying Spirit in writing at the address at the bottom of this page. Cancellations by mail will take approximately 4 to 6 weeks to become effective.

Section 3. Payment.
3.4. 60 days after Trial enrollment in the Club, and on each anniversary thereafter, Members will be automatically charged an annual fee of $59.95 for membership in the Club. Such annual fees are non- refundable, notwithstanding Member’s cancellation of membership in the Club.
3.5. One (1) year after Annual enrollment in the Club, and on each anniversary thereafter, Members will be automatically charged an annual fee of $59.95 for membership in the Club. Such annual fees are non-refundable
Spirit are rip off merchants, who work hard to obfuscate and confuse. Their website is currently flashing up an appeal for customers to contact their representatives to give Spirit the right not to tell customers how much their actual fare will be when advertising their impossibly low fares.

The $9 club is an equally ridiculous offer. You sign up, pay an annual fee and Spirit explicitly states in the Terms and Conditions that they do not guarantee that the member will be able to buy any special low fares!!

However, it took me less than 5 minutes to find these quotes on the Spirit website. They make it clear you will not get your money back. Spirit are very much in the mould of Ryanair. Once they have your money, nothing will ever make them part with it. If someone goes wrong you are on your own. If you make a mistake, they will exploit it to make money out of you. It is the Greyhound of air travel, for backpackers, students and the dispossessed.

Spirit's Terms and Conditions are almost laughably one sided and their fee's are almost incomprehensible. For example, their "Revenue Standby Fee of $25 per customer, each way". Who knows what the hell that is?

Avoid this airline..they are the pits.

This certainly sounds like fraud to me. If you sign up for any 1 year membership, you are entitled to 1 year members regardless of when you cancel it. I would contact your state's attorney general's office. They are frequently very helpful in these situations.

Of course you can talk to your bank about it ... you can always dispute any charge that you wish. Your bank will investigate the validity of the charge. If it turns out that Spirit is acting within the terms of the membership agreement, then your bank will probably determine the charge to be valid. You will help your case with the bank if you can provide specific details that support your claim that the charge is invalid. I hope it works out for you.
