Air Berlin
My wife bought a round trip ticket on Air Berlin from Austin, TX to Berlin, Germany. When she arrived at the ticket counter to return to Austin, she was 15 minutes late and they would not let her board, even though the plane had not left the gate. Air Berlin said she could purchase a one way ticket for the next day for $2,250.00, more than twice what she originally paid for a round trip. She ended up taking an SAS flight two days later for $1,300. Do we have any recourse with Air Berlin?

Only if they made the clocks run faster.... Unfortunately if you checked in late, on a non refundable ticket there isn't much to be done.
